Does my skin need care – and where do I start?

Guidance for anyone who wants to begin with rooibos skin care without overcomplicating it and find suitable African Extracts products.

Start simply

Many skin care routines look more complicated than they need to be. At the beginning, a few clear steps are often enough: cleanse gently, care for the skin when it feels dry or tight, and add only where a real need appears.

In short: Do not start with as many products as possible. Start with the basics: cleanser, toner and day care. Classic is the simple starting point for normal and combination skin, while Advantage offers more comfort. Additional products and Original for Men become easier to place after that.

Basic principle

Skin-friendly care means: do not overload the skin

The skin has its own protective barrier. Good care should not constantly disturb that balance. Too much cleansing, too much exfoliation or too many new products at once can put more strain on the skin than support it.

Cleansing should clear, not strip

“Deep pore cleansing” sounds thorough, but it is not a sensible goal for every skin. Cleansing should remove residue without stripping the skin unnecessarily or losing sight of its protective barrier.

Exfoliation remains an addition

Exfoliation does not simply remove something useless. The outermost horny layer is part of the skin barrier. That is why exfoliation remains an occasional extra step – not the daily standard.

Use care where there is a need

Dry or tight-feeling skin often needs more comfort. This is not only about moisture, but also about care components that support a pleasant barrier feel.

Rule of thumb: The goal is not to use as much care as possible. A good routine keeps your skin calm and truly fits your everyday life.

Rooibos in skin care

What rooibos extract does in this care

Many people first know rooibos as tea. In skin care, rooibos extract is a plant-based component that connects the products with the South African rooibos world. What matters, however, is not rooibos alone, but the whole formulation.

At African Extracts, rooibos is the red thread of the brand. Depending on the product, humectants, plant oils, ceramides, aloe, panthenol or further plant extracts may be added. This creates light starting points, richer care and targeted additions.

Important: Rooibos extract is not a miracle ingredient. What matters is whether the individual product suits your skin situation, your way of using it and your existing routine.

Rooibos gives African Extracts its South African reference. Which product suits the skin, however, depends on skin feel, use and overall formulation.

Basis or addition?

What belongs to the basis – and what can wait?

Think first in terms of basis and addition. The basis keeps care manageable. Further products only come in when a specific question remains open.

The simple basis

Cleanse gently

Useful when dirt, make-up, sebum or residues need to be removed. Cleansing should suit the skin and not dry it out unnecessarily.

Care when the skin looks dry or feels tight

Care should support a pleasant skin feel. With dry skin, it is not only about water. Replenishing and caring components can help lock in moisture more effectively.

Think about light protection during the day

With cleansing and care, less is often sensible. Light protection follows a different logic: when skin is exposed to UV during the day, day care with SPF or a separate sunscreen can be important.

Optional additions

Toner

In the African Extracts starter routines, toner is the second step after cleansing. In general, however, toner is not a required product for every skin situation.

Serum / filler serum / eye care

Adds to the basis when you are looking for more of a moisturised feel or want to focus on a specific area such as the eye area.

Tissue Oil / hand care / night care

More of an additional care step when needed. These products add to the basis when individual skin areas or the evening routine call for more care.

Care components

Which components besides rooibos matter

Rooibos extract is the red thread of the brand. Each product, however, is a finished formulation. That is why it is worth looking at the other care components as well.

Moisture & skin feel

Ingredients such as glycerin, hyaluronic acid, aloe, panthenol or sodium PCA can bind moisture and make the skin surface feel more hydrated.

Care comfort & barrier feel

Jojoba, ceramides, squalane or caring lipids are especially interesting where the skin looks dry, feels tight or needs care that helps lock in moisture.

Plant companions

Individual products contain plant components such as chamomile, witch hazel, aloe, buchu, baobab or further plant extracts.

Light protection in everyday life

Day care with SPF can be practical when you want to combine care and light protection in one step during the day. It does not replace a conscious sun protection routine under stronger UV exposure.

The ingredients mentioned do not necessarily occur in every product. Please check the information on the respective product page.

Look up when needed

Terms and context briefly explained

These short explanations help you place individual terms more clearly. You do not need to read this section from top to bottom.

What does cleanser / cleansing mean?

A cleanser is a cleansing product. It removes dirt, make-up residue, excess sebum and other residues. What matters is not a “deep pore clean” feeling, but cleansing that suits the skin and does not dry it out unnecessarily.

Is toner necessary?

With Classic and Advantage, toner belongs to the suggested three-step basis after cleansing. In general, toner can make the routine feel more pleasant, but it is not a required product for every skin situation.

When does a serum make sense?

A serum is a targeted additional care step. It can make sense when you want to add a more concentrated step to your existing care routine.

What does hyaluronic acid do?

Hyaluronic acid is a humectant. In skin care products, it can especially make the upper skin layer feel more hydrated. It is a useful care component, but not a simple “wrinkles gone” promise.

How often should you exfoliate?

Exfoliation is an occasional additional care step and not a daily standard. The outermost horny layer has a protective function. That is why exfoliation should be used consciously, sparingly and not as a required step.

What makes sense for sensitive skin?

For sensitive skin, a careful start is better than using many new products at once. Check the ingredients on the product page and test new care products cautiously at first.

Deliberately restrained

What this page does not promise

This guide is not meant to promise perfect skin or sell a long beauty routine. It is meant to help place the African Extracts products calmly and understandably.

  • No seven-step routine as a must.
  • No “deep pore clean” rhetoric that loses sight of the skin barrier.
  • No exaggerated anti-ageing promises.
  • No portrayal of rooibos as a miracle ingredient.
  • No recommendation to use several new products at the same time.
