Organic Rooibos Tea 200g, loose leaf
This Skimmelberg Organic Rooibos Tea 200g, loose leaf is Rooibos in its classic form: pure, without flavourings or other added ingredients. Skimmelberg grows and processes the Rooibos in the Cederberg region of South Africa, making its origin easy to trace from the Rooibos fields through to the finished tea.
The loose 200g pack is ideal for anyone who drinks Rooibos regularly, prefers to adjust the amount used for each cup or pot, and values Rooibos sourced directly from the producer.
What does red Rooibos from Skimmelberg taste like?
Red Rooibos from Skimmelberg tastes mild, smooth and rounded, with a subtle natural sweetness and warm, lightly earthy notes. When infused, it develops its characteristic copper-red to reddish-brown colour.
As no flavourings or other plants are added, the natural character of the Rooibos remains at the centre of the cup. Classic red Rooibos has a warmer, rounder character than Green Rooibos, which tastes lighter and more plant-like.
Rooibos is naturally caffeine-free, so it can be enjoyed at any time of day – on its own, with a little milk or according to personal preference.
What does “direct from Skimmelberg” mean?
Skimmelberg grows Rooibos on its own farms in the Cederberg and processes it itself. This means its origin remains traceable from agricultural cultivation through to the finished Rooibos tea.
Skimmelberg is therefore not simply a tea brand, but a Rooibos grower and processor. The family-run farms are located in the Cederberg in South Africa’s Western Cape – the region where Rooibos naturally originates.
After harvesting, the initially green plant material is processed to produce classic red Rooibos. During oxidation, its colour changes to the characteristic reddish-brown shade while its warm, rounded flavour profile develops.
This close connection between cultivation and processing distinguishes Skimmelberg Rooibos from products where only the general origin “South Africa” is known. At Skimmelberg, farming, processing and the finished tea remain closely connected.
Why choose loose leaf Rooibos?
Loose Rooibos is particularly suitable for regular Rooibos drinkers because the amount can be adjusted freely for a single cup or a whole pot. The 200g pack provides a practical supply for everyday use.
The fine Rooibos needles can spread well in a sufficiently large filter or tea infuser, allowing the water to circulate evenly around them.
If you prefer the classic warm and rounded character of Rooibos, red Rooibos is the right choice. If you would like to discover the same plant with a lighter, fresher and more plant-like character, try Skimmelberg Green Rooibos.
How do I prepare loose Rooibos?
Loose Rooibos should steep for about five minutes or longer to allow its characteristic colour, aroma and full flavour to develop. Unlike black or green tea, Rooibos can steep considerably longer without quickly becoming bitter. If the infusion becomes too strong, simply dilute it with a little water.
The commonly recommended five to eight minutes are therefore not an upper limit for Rooibos, but a useful starting point. A shorter steeping time produces a lighter infusion. The longer Rooibos steeps, the fuller and stronger the cup becomes.
Place the desired amount of Rooibos in a tea infuser, filter or directly into the teapot and add hot water. The water does not necessarily need to be at a rolling boil.
- Use Rooibos according to your preferred strength
- Pour over hot water
- Steep for about 5 minutes or longer
- Steep longer for a stronger flavour
- Dilute an overly strong infusion with water
About five minutes is a good starting point for the typical colour, aroma and flavour of Rooibos to develop fully. In practice, there is no fixed upper steeping time. Rooibos can remain in the pot for much longer or be brewed slowly in a saucepan.
Can Rooibos also be cold brewed?
Yes, Rooibos can also be infused with cold water. For a cold brew, the much longer steeping time compensates for the lower water temperature.
Simply combine the loose Rooibos with cold water and leave it to infuse in the refrigerator for several hours. This produces a mild and refreshing Rooibos infusion without having to heat the water first.
