Organic Buchu Oil 10 ml
Skimmelberg Organic Buchu Oil, 10 ml – the aromatic core of the Buchu leaf
Anyone who rubs a Buchu leaf between their fingers immediately notices what sets Buchu apart from Rooibos, Honeybush or Cancerbush: the essential oil sits directly in the leaf and can be sensed on the fingers straight away. That is exactly where this cool, striking aroma comes from, with notes of blackcurrant, mint and fresh clarity. Skimmelberg Organic Buchu Oil is the concentrated form of this leaf aroma.
That is why this product is not simply “just another oil”, but the aromatic core of the plant in concentrated form. Anyone who has only known Buchu as a tea discovers here the side of the plant that is already present in the leaf itself – and is then carefully extracted during distillation.
Why Buchu naturally makes sense as an oil
With Buchu, the aroma is not just vaguely present somewhere in the plant – it is very clearly concentrated in the leaf. That is why Buchu oil is not an artificial product idea, but the logical concentrated form of the plant itself. While with other herbs one tends to think first of tea or infusion, Buchu almost naturally leads to oil – because that is where its distinctive aromatic core lies.
How Skimmelberg produces the oil
At Skimmelberg, the Buchu oil is steam-distilled directly on the farm. The steam passes through the plant material, carries the volatile aromatic compounds with it, and is then condensed again. This creates two phases: the Buchu oil itself and the Buchu water, also known as the hydrosol.
On the farm page, this process is not shown as something abstract, but in very concrete terms: the boiler, the steam and the equipment that turns leaf material into oil. That is what makes a product like this so tangible – it is not only grown there, but also processed on site.
Buchu oil and Buchu water are closely related
Steam distillation produces two phases: the concentrated Buchu oil and the milder Buchu water, or hydrosol. The hydrosol is the water phase of the distillation, while the oil is the concentrated aromatic oil phase.
Skimmelberg explains that as little as 1–2 drops in 1 litre of water can already be enough to give it a noticeable Buchu taste. If you would like to experience Buchu in a water-based, much milder form, Buchu water or hydrosol is still the more natural choice. Buchu oil remains the concentrated form and is therefore used very sparingly.
Why a small bottle is not “just a little”
About 100 kg of Buchu are needed to produce around 1 kg of Buchu oil. That figure explains the price better than any marketing phrase. A small bottle contains not just a fragrance, but a considerable amount of leaf material, harvesting work, distillation and farm infrastructure.
What is inside Buchu oil
Chemically, Buchu oil is not a simple single-note scent, but a complex profile. Particularly important are key components such as diosphenol, pseudo-diosphenol, isomenthone, menthone, limonene and – depending on the type – also pulegone. These are exactly the compounds that shape the typical Buchu character: blackcurrant-like, minty, fresh, clear and at the same time distinctive.
No one needs to memorise these names. What matters is this: the typical Buchu aroma is no coincidence. Even a few drops carry a clearly recognisable signature – blackcurrant-like, minty, fresh and distinctive.
What happens after distillation
At Skimmelberg, the story does not end once the oil has been separated. The plant material remaining after distillation is reused and returned to the agricultural cycle. That is one of the things that makes oil production on the farm so interesting: first the leaf becomes aroma, and what remains afterwards stays part of the system.
Directly from Skimmelberg
This Buchu oil comes directly from Skimmelberg in the Cederberg. The Buchu plants grow there across 16 fields, and the distillation takes place there as well. With a product like this, that is more than just a note of origin: with Buchu oil, the way it is processed directly determines what finally ends up in the bottle.
Note on use
Buchu oil is highly concentrated and should therefore be used sparingly. Always follow the instructions given on the product label.
