Organic Red Honeybush Tea 120g, loose leaf
This Skimmelberg Organic Red Honeybush Tea 120g, loose leaf comes from Nooitgedacht Farm in the Kouga Mountains of South Africa’s Eastern Cape. This is where Melmont produces its Mountain Honeybush from Cyclopia intermedia. For this product, the Honeybush is packed by Skimmelberg.
The 120g pack is particularly suitable for anyone who would like to discover Honeybush or enjoy it alongside Rooibos and other teas.
What does Red Honeybush taste like?
Red Honeybush tastes mild, smooth and naturally slightly sweet. Its characteristic profile combines floral and fruity aromas with a golden to reddish-brown colour in the cup.
Honeybush does not get its name from added honey. The yellow flowers of the plant have a honey-like fragrance, which gave rise to the name “Honeybush”.
The characteristic profile of Red Honeybush develops during processing. The plant material is cut and carefully oxidised. This process develops its warm colour and naturally sweet, aromatic flavour profile.
What is the difference between Honeybush and Rooibos?
Honeybush and Rooibos are two different South African fynbos plants. Honeybush generally tastes slightly sweeter, more floral and fruitier, while classic red Rooibos is characterised more by warm, rounded and lightly earthy notes.
If you enjoy Rooibos, Honeybush is therefore not simply a flavoured variation of Rooibos, but a distinct South African infusion plant in its own right.
Like Rooibos, Honeybush is naturally caffeine-free and can therefore be enjoyed at any time of day.
Where does this Honeybush come from?
The Honeybush raw material comes entirely from Melmont’s Nooitgedacht Farm in the Eastern Cape. Melmont processes only Honeybush from its own farm and does not blend it with raw material from other origins.
Nooitgedacht Farm is located in the Kouga Mountains near Kareedouw. Here, Cyclopia intermedia, also known as Mountain Honeybush, grows on the slopes of this South African fynbos landscape.
After harvesting and processing at Melmont, the organic Honeybush for this product is packed by Skimmelberg. This keeps the origin of the raw material and the packing process clearly traceable.
How do I prepare loose Honeybush?
Loose Honeybush can be infused with hot water and left to steep for about five minutes or considerably longer. A longer steeping time produces a stronger, more aromatic infusion and is by no means unusual in the traditional preparation of Honeybush.
Place the desired amount of Honeybush in a tea infuser, filter or directly into a teapot and pour over hot water.
- Use Honeybush according to your preferred strength
- Pour over hot water
- Steep for about 5 minutes or longer
- Steep longer for a stronger flavour
- Also enjoy chilled as iced tea
Short steeping times are not a fixed upper limit for Honeybush. Historical accounts from South African growing regions even describe Honeybush infusions that were kept warm for extended periods and repeatedly topped up.
As early as 1815, Christian Ignatius Latrobe reported after travelling through the Langkloof that he had encountered a constantly filled infusion vessel containing the locally served “tea-water”, which is today interpreted as Honeybush. Honeybush later became regionally known as “Three-Day Tea”.
Why choose the 120g pack?
The 120g pack is ideal for discovering Honeybush and for anyone who enjoys it occasionally or alongside other teas.
If you already prepare Honeybush regularly and prefer a larger supply, the 300g pack is the more suitable size.
